Why Make Your Own Aroid Potting Mix?

Making your own aroid potting mix has several key benefits:

  • You control the ingredients (no pests or harmful chemicals)
  • You can customize moisture retention and drainage
  • It’s more cost-effective for larger plant collections
  • You’ll better understand how fast your soil dries out, preventing over or under-watering

If you're serious about aroid plant health, the right potting mix is just as important as light and water.

What Plants Can Use This Mix?

This mix is ideal for nearly all popular aroids, including:

If you grow aroids indoors, this soil mix will give them the best start and sustained growth.

Aroid Potting Mix Base: The Core Trio

Start by making the base mix using equal parts of three essential ingredients:

1. Coco Coir (⅓ of the mix)

  • Made from coconut husks - sustainable & eco-friendly
  • Light, fluffy texture promotes aeration
  • Great moisture retention without waterlogging
  • Contains natural potassium & lignin to support flowering and root growth
  • Pest-free and clean

2. Perlite (⅓ of the mix)

  • Volcanic glass with excellent drainage properties
  • Retains moisture while keeping the mix airy
  • Prevents root rot by improving soil structure
  • Sterile and free from weed seeds or pests
  • I always rinse my perlite before use to reduce dust and improve consistency

3. Orchid Bark (⅓ of the mix)

  • Provides structure and anchors roots
  • Retains some moisture but allows excess water to escape
  • Promotes root development and prevents compaction
  • Use medium to large bark pieces for the best results

🌿 Mix these three together thoroughly in a large container. This is your base mix and it’s already excellent on its own. But for even better results, I’ll now enhance it further.

Optional Additions for a Superior Aroid Potting Mix

To enrich the mix even more, I add three more ingredients in smaller amounts - approximately 1 part of each for every 8 parts of the base mix. For example, if you use 4 liters of base mix, add 0.5 liters of each of the following:

4. LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate)

  • Provides aeration and drainage
  • Lightweight and reusable
  • Prevents overwatering and root suffocation
  • Made from natural clay, sustainable and clean

5. Vermiculite

  • Absorbs moisture while staying lightweight
  • Contains magnesium, potassium, and calcium
  • Helps roots access consistent moisture
  • Neutral pH and enhances air-water balance in the soil

6. Horticultural Charcoal

  • Acts as a natural soil purifier
  • Absorbs toxins, impurities, and excess nutrients
  • Improves aeration and drainage
  • Helps keep the soil fresh and healthy long term

💡 Tip: Don’t stress about exact measurements. You can mix by hand and adjust based on your plant’s needs and environment.

Final Mixing Instructions for aroid potting mix

  1. Combine all three base ingredients in equal parts
  2. Add 1/8th volume each of LECA, vermiculite, and charcoal
  3. Mix everything thoroughly by hand
  4. Store in a sealed container with a lid to keep it fresh and pest-free

After adding LECA, vermiculite, and charcoal into your base mix, stir everything thoroughly. This final blend is the complete aroid potting mix that supports healthy root development and long-term plant growth.

🌱 The result? A loose, rich, breathable soil that supports strong root growth, balanced moisture, and happy aroid plants.

How to Store Your Aroid Potting Mix

To maintain the quality of your aroid mix:

  • Store it in a plastic bin with a tight-fitting lid
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight
  • Avoid letting it dry out or become compacted
  • Sealing the container also keeps out fungus gnats and pests

Properly stored, your mix can last several months, ready for whenever you need to repot or refresh your soil.

Adjusting the Mix for Your Environment

This aroid potting mix works beautifully for most indoor aroid growers, but every environment is different. You may want to:

  • Reduce coco coir if your home is very humid
  • Add more bark or perlite if your plant sits in a low-light corner
  • Use extra LECA for plants that are prone to overwatering

🌿 The beauty of making your own mix is that it evolves with your experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best aroid potting mix?

A light, airy blend of equal parts coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark. Add LECA, vermiculite, or charcoal to fine-tune drainage and moisture.

Can I use regular potting soil for aroids?

Not on its own, since it holds too much water and starves the roots of air. Mix it with plenty of perlite and bark, or use this soil-free recipe instead.

Which plants can use this aroid mix?

Most aroids, including philodendrons, monsteras, alocasias, anthuriums, and pothos, plus other plants that like a chunky, airy mix.

How often should I replace the mix?

Refresh it every one to two years when you repot, or sooner if it breaks down and stays soggy.

Do I need to sterilize the ingredients?

Not usually. Just use clean, fresh ingredients and store the mix in a dry, sealed container.
