Propagation and Germination in a pot at home
From Acorn to Oak Tree! Propagation and Germination from acorn/seed
Growing oak from acorns is very easy. Start by gathering mature acorns, when they drop to the ground in the fall. It is best to plant or stack immediately, as storage in a dry place quickly results in loss of viability.
If you have already gathered acorns, you can follow the next steps on how to start germination:
(you can watch the full video with step by step explanations for better understanding)
1. Collect Healthy Acorns
2. Remove the caps
3. Float testing: Put all the acorns in water
4. Discard acorns that float in water
5. Soil – Compost 6. Use pots with drainage holes
7. The top of the acorn is planted upwards
8. Water them until water comes out of the holes
9. After 15 min. spray them again with soft water
10. Put them under a plastic bag to retain the moisture
11. Make holes for airflow
12. Put the pots in a warm and light place
13. Water them daily with a spray bottle, to make sure they don’t dry out.
14. It takes between 20-30 days to germinate
