How to Clean and Prepare Moss for Making Terrarium: A Step-by-Step Guide
Clean and Prepare Moss and Lichen for Making Terrarium; If you’re planning to make a terrarium, you’ll need to clean and prepare the moss and lichens you’ve collected. Proper cleaning and preparation ensure that your moss stays healthy and looks beautiful in your terrarium. In this article, we’ll show you how to clean and prepare moss for making a terrarium.
Step 1: Collecting Moss and Lichen
Before you clean and prepare the moss, you’ll need to collect it. You can easily find moss and lichen in shaded areas after a rainy day. Once you’ve collected the moss and lichen, put them in plastic bags or containers for transporting. But don’t put lichens in plastic bags after collecting, keep them dry till you decide to use them.
Step 2: Keeping Moss in Plastic Bags
If you plan to keep the moss in plastic bags for later use, make sure you don’t leave it in there for more than 30 hours. This can cause the moss to rot and become unusable. Instead, keep them in plastic containers or bags to keep the humidity.
Step 3: Cleaning the Moss
Once you’re ready to clean the moss, put distilled or rainwater in a bowl. Clean the moss one by one gently and remove all dirt. Be sure to remove all branches and leaves as well. If you plan to keep the moss for later use, watch my other video on this link.
Step 4: Preparing the Moss for Terrarium
To prepare the moss for your terrarium, put two layers of soil (if you plan to keep the moss for a longer period, put pebbles first layer), followed by a layer of dry leaves. After that, spray the moss with filtered water and put the lid on the container. Place the container in a bright place, avoiding direct sunlight. To keep the moss healthy, spray them twice a week.
Step 5: Preparing Ebony Spleenwort
If you’ve collected Ebony spleenwort, it’s essential to put it in water to avoid root drying. This will ensure that the plant remains healthy and viable for your terrarium.
