The Recipe: Simple Yet Effective (Watch the Video for Visual Instructions)

To create this fantastic organic fertilizer for houseplants, you’ll need just two ingredients: four large tablespoons of lentils (red or brown) and one liter of water. It’s worth noting that when watering your Calathea plants, using distilled water is highly recommended to avoid any impurities that could potentially harm your plants.

The Preparation Process

Begin by placing four large tablespoons of lentils (red or brown) into a glass container.

  • Pour one liter of water into the container. If you wish to make a larger quantity of fertilizer for multiple plants, simply maintain the ratio of 4:1 for lentils to water.

Allow the lentil and water mixture to sit undisturbed for approximately four hours. During this time, the lentils will gradually release their nutrients into the water, creating a nutrient-rich fertilizer ready to nourish your plants.

Why Lentils Make Exceptional Organic Fertilizer for Houseplants

Lentils are a natural powerhouse of nutrients, including essential elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. When used as a fertilizer, lentils promote robust growth, improve soil quality, enhance plant health, and offer an eco-friendly and budget-friendly alternative to synthetic fertilizers.

Moreover, lentils enrich the soil structure and help retain moisture, providing optimal conditions for strong root growth. This, in turn, increases the plants’ resilience against diseases and pests. Lentils are not only sustainable but also readily available, making them an excellent choice for those looking to make a positive impact on both their plants and the environment.

A Bonus Method: Maximizing the Leftover Mixture

Once you’ve steeped the lentils, you can utilize the leftover mixture in another beneficial way. Simply pour it directly onto the pot’s soil and cover it with a layer of fresh soil. If you’re repotting a plant, consider mixing the residual lentil solution into the new soil. This method ensures a slow, steady release of nutrients to your plants and serves as a long-term soil amendment. It’s a simple yet highly effective way to make the most of the leftover lentil mixture, providing your plants with the essential nutrients they need to thrive.

Proof in the Plants

To illustrate the effectiveness of this organic fertilizer for houseplants, (take a look at the video below) of Calathea plant. When initially acquired, most of its leaves were dry and curled, indicating a lack of proper care. However, after just a month of watering it with lentil-infused water, the new growth is healthy and beautiful, and the plant has flourished into a lush, bushier version of itself.

Incorporating this organic fertilizer into your plant care routine can yield remarkable results. Give your houseplants the nurturing they deserve while embracing the benefits of a natural, eco-friendly approach to growth enhancement. Your plants will thank you with their vibrant beauty and lush foliage!
